PHILOSOPHY

"Through music we possess a means for a general development of the human soul...a means that cannot be replaced by any other subject...the elements of music are precious instruments in education.  Rhythm develops attention, concentration, determination, and the ability to condition oneself.  Melody opens up the world of the emotions. Dynamic variation and tone colour sharpen our hearing..."
-Zoltán Kodály

Fiddlesticks Studio of Fine Arts for Young Children is inspired by the Kodály Method of music education which applies a highly sequential approach to teaching music to young children. Kodaly believed that music should be a part of every child's every day life.

THE FIDDLESTICKS PHILOSOPHY

Fiddlesticks was established in response to the confusing standards of early childhood education that are common in North American society, in particular those standards associated with what and how young children learn. Creativity and the spaces where individual creativity can flourish are often missing from contemporary education (including pre-school and daycare) by virtue of its size and institutional nature.

The philosophy employed at Fiddlesticks has been built upon the idea that childhood is a "sacred space" that must be revered as such. In the opportunity to interact with and through music and art, children build confidence in their own creativity. Children focus, have fun and put their immeasurable talents in motion.

The point of studying music is not to become a musician, nor of mixing paint to become an artist. It is to foster a passion for, and a skill of learning consequently developing awareness of one's self and of one's environment. Activities at Fiddlesticks encourage children to learn about themselves and their own perspectives on the world.

The philosophy behind Fiddlesticks is that the opportunity for a child to acquire a familiarity with their own creativity is fundamental both to their own mental and emotional growth, and to that of our society.

"Nature never repeats herself, and the possibilities of one human soul will never be found in another."
-Elizabeth Cady Stanton
